What Will Be Different This Year? By, Alice Murphy MS,LPC,DNN

As we start out the new year with its of anticipation of what the year holds for us, we are consciously aware of the willingness and excitement to successssfully achieve our New Year's resolutions. For many of us, history tells us that as time goes by the newness of the new year becomes mundane. When that happens the newnesss and excitement for the resolutions deteriorate as well and therefore goes unachieved. That is a hard, self-inflicted place to start the new year. We know our behavioral patterns, limitations and the fall-out resulting from unfilled goals. It leads to or continues to feed unhealthy lifestyles. If a farmer plants weeds, he expects to get weeds, and if he plants corn, he knows he will get corn. It is all about what you are planting within your internal garden. So instead of setting yourself up for hardship and disappointment, set yourself up for happiness, balance , and harmony.

Research shows that if we complete small goals that we know we can achieve, like returning items from the Christmas holiday that we do not like or need, confronting a conflict and resolving it or finding time to spend 30 minuets on self-care, we live happier lives and feel extreme levels of confidence in our ability to attain fulfillment in many areas of our lives.

To make this possible and to remove the harsh feelings of failure, try to set one goal a month. It does not have to be anything gigantic. It could be something as small as looking at yourself in the mirror and saying, "I love you," call, write or send a card to a friend you haven't spoken to in a long time, taking the children, family or yourself to a movie, or perhaps stage a campout in the living room or backyard. It does not have to be a huge goal. Remember, whatever you are planing will grow. Setting one goal a month will help plant healthier self-esteem, promote self-confidence, reduce stress and reflect a happier YOU!
